UST Welcomes New Rector, Chancellor

As the academic year 2012-2013 opened, the University of Santo Tomas installed its 96th rector, Rev. Fr. Herminio V. Dagohoy, O.P., PhD, and its new Vice Chancellor, Rev. Fr. Gerard Francisco P. Timoner, III, O.P.,right after the Misa de Apertura, which was celebrated by the Apostolic Nuncio to the Philippines, Archbishop Giuseppe Pinto, at the UST Chapel.

The UST Alumni, members of the diplomatic corps, heads of Universities, professional organizations, cultural institutions, support staffs, student leaders, students, faculty members, Regents, the Board of Trustees, the Academic Senate, administrative officials, academic officials, and Heads of Colleges flocked to welcome the new Rector and Vice Chancellor.

When Dagohoy received the news that the Holy See already confirmed the nomination as 96th rector, he was enveloped by fear and really prayed hard for courage. “Believing that it is the part of His Divine plan, God entrusted this work upon me to bring it to completion,”Dagohoy said during his inaugural address. He is grateful to former rector, Fr. dela Rosa, for establishing a strong foundation by which the UST is standing today.

“I believe that this occasion should center on the institution, to the Royal and Pontifical University of Santo Tomas.”Dagohoy emphasizes that the installation of the rector should focus on the university’s mission, its ability to generate knowledge and new discoveries, its service to the church, and its contribution to the Philippine society.

Dagohoy was ordained to the priesthood on September 28, 1994 at the Santo Domingo Church in Quezon City and previously held posts as Prior/Superior of the Santo Domingo Convent, QC, and Caleruega, Batangas.  He was the Rector of Angelicum College in QC. The 96th rector also worked as Prior of the Priory of St. Thomas Aquinas in UST and the chief finance officer of UST Hospital.

“My beloved Thomasians, today, I hope that you will walk with me with courage, as we realize our shared visions of UST’s future.” Dagohoy said as he ended his speech.
